LANCE Spring Training 2016

This weekend marked the beginning of Spring Training, and we think it was a great success!

The weather was gorgeous, and we had a whole gaggle of new people as well as current members show up to train at Mayor Carl Langford Park with us! Though we didn't get started until around 10:30am on Saturday due to some traffic issues (there was a foot race going on that blocked roads and detoured several of our members on their way to training), we made up for lost time by splitting into two main classes: Basic Unarmed with Casey and Marissa, and Basic Sword with AJ. Everyone worked their butts off, getting enthusiastically sweaty and dusty all the while, until we finished up at 2:00pm.

On Sunday, the weather continued to be perfect, and we had even more new people show up to train with us! It was Garb Day, and though most of us forgot (again), some LANCE members came out in full regalia! We broke up into three or four groups to train and choreograph, and every single person at training surpassed our trainers' expectations for newcomers and old hats alike! LANCE is very lucky. We've got a great group of people, and our new trainees fit right in with our kooky, talented troupe!

A special thank you to Bethany and Jessica for bringing so many newcomers to LANCE training! We'll be at it again next Sunday, and we're looking forward to a turn-out as awesome as the one we enjoyed this weekend!

See you at Spring Training!

Practice Report

Well, it was a pretty great day of LANCE practice out at Mayor Carl Langford park. It was hot as Satan's sweaty palms out there, but that didn't stop us from rehearsing our butts off for our Tournament of Funding event at Cloak & Blaster on November 18th!

Charles, our fight director for the event, arrived early to set up three 12ft. by 12ft. spaces for us. That's the thing, you see: we have to learn to fight in close quarters to allow for the tables that will be nearly boxing in the performance space at Cloak & Blaster. That amps up the difficulty level for us because we're used to having all the grassy field we could want. It also means no sweeping sword movements, no flinging weapons willy-nilly, and absolutely no running away. For those of us fighting Ian (read: me), the "no running away" rule is the hardest one to follow.

We have some sweet fights, ya'll. Here's a list of the fights I saw at practice today:
  • Amy vs. Charles
  • Charles vs. Casey (Me!)
  • Marissa vs. Michael
  • Ari vs. AJ
  • Ian vs. Casey (Me again!)
Ian and AJ didn't get the chance to practice their fight at rehearsal today, but rumor has it they've got a pretty good one cookin'. In fact, all of the fights for this Cloak & Blaster event will knock your socks off. Get excited. I mean, really. If you haven't gotten your tickets for the Tournament of Funding at Cloak & Blaster on the 18th, go to Eventbrite and do that now. It's gonna be a good time!

We also got a visit from Keith Newhouse, co-director of The Quest, Choose Your Adventure! (His ambitious production opens at The Venue on November 14th and runs through November 22nd. Get your tickets online now!) Keith is an old friend of AJ and Charles, two of LANCE's trainers. He asked them to choreograph a fight for The Quest a few weeks ago, and they delivered! LANCE is going as a group to see the show, and we hope you can make it, too!

Overall, Sunday was a blast. Sweaty, dirty, and hard work, yes, but well worth a little grit under our fingers. That full body ache we're going to have for the next three days only serves to prove that everyone at rehearsal today did our level best to fake beat the crap out of each other. These are the hallmarks of a great day at LANCE, and we wouldn't have it any other way!

See you next weekend!
