We'd like to take some time to recognize these individuals for their achievements this month. Through a whole lot of hard work and sheer effort of will, they have accomplished their goals and gained a few new skills in the process. We are so proud of our graduates, and we look forward to training and performing with them for a long time to come!

Sword for Hire Fundraising Campaign

LANCE members are constantly looking for ways share our culture with our fans and supporters. We are also a growing troupe in need of more weapons as our membership flourishes. We have come up with a fundraiser that combines our desire to share with our ambition to grow, and it’s called Sword for Hire.

Sword for Hire is a long-term, ongoing fundraiser that allows donors to help build LANCE's armory as we evolve as a community and performance troupe. You can choose from several weapon types and donate the price of the weapon (including a little bit extra toward its upkeep), thus adding another weapon to LANCE’s armory. In exchange, we offer you naming rights for the weapon and the ability to track its progress over the course of its life with LANCE.

Every year on the anniversary of your donation, we will send you a complete update on your weapon, including pictures, write-ups on any events it participates in, and quotes from the performers who wield it. If your weapon is damaged, we’ll let you know what what’s being done to repair it, and if--Merlin forbid--we are forced to retire your weapon, we’ll deliver the news to you as delicately as we can.

We even have a member of the troupe dedicated to recording the history of our armory, the Chronicler of Arms. Her name is Marissa Kraatz, and she doubles as LANCE's Documentarian, so you know she knows her stuff. No one is more excited to get this new fundraiser off the ground than Marissa, who believes in the important role Sword for Hire plays in enriching LANCE's culture (as well as bolstering our armory). Every new weapon added to our armory is another opportunity for our performers to learn and grow with the troupe, another combat performance that will surprise and entertain our patrons, another story for the Chronicler of Arms to tell. Who wouldn't be excited about that?

Hire a Weapon!
Visit the Armory!
Below you can watch Sword for Hire's promotional video featuring the President of LANCE Orlando, AJ Harrett!
We hope you'll consider donating a weapon to the cause, but if you can't participate in Sword for Hire directly, that's okay! Help us out by sharing our posts on Facebook and telling your friends about LANCE Orlando! Thank you so much to all of our friends and supporters! We are the troupe we have become because of your tireless encouragement and kind patronage!

Until next time,

Conquest: Medieval Broadsword

3/26/2016

Comments

Hosted by Peter Woodward, Conquest is a TV series about weapons from throughout history. This show was recommended by Michael, our Training Committee Chair, who found it while doing research and thought it would be an interesting addition to the blog. Well, he thought right!

Medieval Broadsword is Episode 1 of Season 2. It aired on July 6th, 2003. Here's the synopsis from TV.com:
Actor and fight master Peter Woodward teaches the Conquest Team a brief history of the Medieval Broadsword and various combat techniques with it, both offensive and defensive. Then the team members face off to find who has best learned how to win with the Medieval Broadsword.
You can watch the full episode in three parts below!

The Adventures of Robin Hood

3/12/2016

Comments

If you happen to be a fan of old-timey television, British period dramas, and swashbuckling adventures, boy have we got a show for you! It's called The Adventures of Robin Hood, and it's about to bowl you over with awesome. Here's a summary from the IMDb page for the series:
A long-running series of adventures featuring Robin of Loxley - Robin Hood - and his group of Sherwood-Forest-based freedom fighters. Robin and his men protected England from the evil machinations of Prince John while good King Richard was away at the Crusades. The series was primarily intended for children, and was unusual in that it frequently re-used the same actors in different roles, or different actors in recurring roles.
Written by Marg Baskin
The show, which aired 143 episodes from 1955 until 1960, starred Richard Greene, Alan Wheatley, and Bernadette O'Farrell, among others. It features one of the best theme songs in living memory and a healthy dose of good-natured camp. A solid chunk of the show is available to watch on YouTube, but we're going to start you off with the first episode right here. You're welcome.
Thank you to VP Michael for this excellent suggestion. We hope you all enjoy it as much as we have!

LANCE Spring Training 2016

This weekend marked the beginning of Spring Training, and we think it was a great success!

The weather was gorgeous, and we had a whole gaggle of new people as well as current members show up to train at Mayor Carl Langford Park with us! Though we didn't get started until around 10:30am on Saturday due to some traffic issues (there was a foot race going on that blocked roads and detoured several of our members on their way to training), we made up for lost time by splitting into two main classes: Basic Unarmed with Casey and Marissa, and Basic Sword with AJ. Everyone worked their butts off, getting enthusiastically sweaty and dusty all the while, until we finished up at 2:00pm.

On Sunday, the weather continued to be perfect, and we had even more new people show up to train with us! It was Garb Day, and though most of us forgot (again), some LANCE members came out in full regalia! We broke up into three or four groups to train and choreograph, and every single person at training surpassed our trainers' expectations for newcomers and old hats alike! LANCE is very lucky. We've got a great group of people, and our new trainees fit right in with our kooky, talented troupe!

A special thank you to Bethany and Jessica for bringing so many newcomers to LANCE training! We'll be at it again next Sunday, and we're looking forward to a turn-out as awesome as the one we enjoyed this weekend!

See you at Spring Training!
